Hospitality that Authentically Welcomes All

How can the hospitality industry ensure inclusive practices internally as well as externally?

YES Institute is often invited to lead training for companies seeking best practices to create a welcoming environment for their customers. Over the past couple of years, our team has been requested to lead diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility training for staff with the purpose of strengthening internal workplace culture, deepening employee relationships, and increasing customer satisfaction.

YES Institute’s facilitators create a safe environment for staff to share, and lead training sessions that provide the tools and communication model for team members to have a psychologically safe team and inclusive environment.

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau recently requested one of our corporate trainings in Spanish, for the staff of a local hotel. Participants were vulnerable in sharing about their experiences with gender and orientation particularly around personal matters such as family and religion. One of the staff shared that this was not something that they openly discussed among colleagues, nor did they talk about it at home or within the Hispanic community. The conversation also lent itself to create awareness for those in the pride community who are traveling, the barriers faced, and the practices that create welcoming experiences.

“Mil gracias por toda tu ayuda y paciencia con nosotros que somos novatos en el tema, pero con gran deseo de aprender y crecer.  / Thank you very much for all your help and patience with those of us who are new to the subject, but with a great desire to learn and grow.”

“Aprendí a tratar con respeto a toda persona sin importar su género. / I learned to treat everyone with respect regardless of their gender.”

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens invited our education team to lead our Communication Toolbox to their staff. The course provided staff an opportunity to be with one another while learning the same communication model. Participants asked for guidance when they were curious about how to approach their colleagues’ gender and orientation without crossing boundaries and while maintaining respect. One of the staff opened up about their own experience of gender in the professional context and felt safe in sharing their pronouns with the group.

“I was expecting a more straightforward approach and was impressed by how much I was able to learn about myself and my colleagues, on multiple levels, throughout the process of engaging in the practical exercises.”

“I learned how to listen, re-create, and respond with generosity for people that I don’t agree with at first. This can leave space open for dialog which may eventually lead to closer agreement. I realized that if that space isn’t left open, then chances are they’ll never have an opportunity to learn within their echo chamber.”

“It’s profound how differently common experiences can be received and processed between individuals, and serves as a valuable reminder to always challenge my assumptions.”

YES Institute’s educational approach is unique and leads with purpose, authenticity, and communication on any of our topics. Our interactive dialogues are based on a communication model that effectively engages every individual by including all viewpoints. We give people powerful communication tools that provide access to breakthroughs and the opportunity to produce results, even in the face of disagreement.
