Founding Member of our Kiaora Society of Donors
June 3, 2023, marked a somber day for all who knew and cherished Edwin (Ed) McAmis. It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of his passing, and bid farewell to a remarkable individual who left an indelible impact on our lives. Ed is survived by his partner of 27 years, Gerson Gonzalez, his son Bruce and daughter-in-law Karen, 3 grandchildren, a sister, two nieces, and several cousins.
Ed was more than just a beloved friend, and esteemed community member; he was a beacon of light, compassion, and generosity. His unwavering commitment to making the world safer resonated with all who had the privilege of knowing him. We remember Ed not only for his warm smile, infectious chuckle, kind heart, and unwavering spirit but also for his role as a trailblazer as the very first private donor to the YES Institute.
In 1997, Ed’s visionary support paved the way for this organization that has gone on to transform and save countless lives. His generous act of philanthropy established the donor society upon which the YES Institute was built. Ed’s foresight and dedication laid the groundwork for a future where understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity have flourished. To honor Ed as our very first private donor, our donor society was named after the street on which he and Gerson lived. Coincidentally, “Kia ora” is a Maori word that is used to convey “welcome,” making our donor society name (The Kiaora Society of Donors) uniquely fitting. All of our donors have followed in the footsteps of Ed and Gerson and we are so very grateful. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked to consider a gift to the YES Institute and/or the ACLU of Florida.
