Creating Space for Growth, Identity & Allyship at Summer Camps

This summer, the YES Institute had the privilege of leading powerful, interactive workshops for two inspiring youth leadership programs: Camp MetroTown, hosted by Mosaic Miami, and the First Star Academy at the University of Miami, which supports college readiness for youth with a foster care experience.

At First Star, our dialogue centered on understanding gender and orientation. When we arrived, we overheard students using anti-gay slurs—a stark reminder of the ongoing need to foster truly inclusive spaces. Yet, by the end of the session, those same students were actively engaging in thoughtful conversations about allyship, identity, and the real-world impact of their words. Witnessing that transformation in just one hour was a powerful testament to the openness and growth possible when young people are given the space to reflect, connect, and be heard.

At MetroTown, we facilitated two dynamic sessions—no slides, just conversation, creativity, and connection. The first explored well-being and resilience, inviting students to reflect on how they adapt and grow through life’s challenges. The second session explored gender identity and intersectionality, utilizing activities that encouraged students to examine the labels they carry—both those imposed upon them and those they choose for themselves. These sessions sparked moments of laughter, vulnerability, and deep insight.

Youth are eager to engage with big questions—about who they are, how they relate to others, and what it means to live authentically. We’re honored to support that journey.
