Florida Suicide Prevention and School Safety Resources Conference

YES Institute presented at two conferences in February on the Florida Gulf Coast, expanding our outreach and networking efforts statewide.

The Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition (FSPC) conference draws researchers, community nonprofits, and loss survivors and their families to convene, learn, network, and strengthen prevention, intervention, and postvention initiatives. The FSPC is dedicated to increasing awareness and encouraging the prevention of suicide through legislative advocacy, statewide education, and collaboration and has statewide representatives from every county in Florida. YES Institute education team members presented on, “Youth and Young Adult Suicide Prevention for Parents and Families with Gender, Orientation, and Neurodiverse Children.” We shared our communication frameworks, direct testimonies of full recoveries after a youth suicide attempt and unique community engagement strategies of our work.

Participants shared:

“I loved the personal touches, stories, and experiences. The facilitator was excellent at answering tough questions with empathy!”

“The session was wonderful, taught with gentleness and cultural competency in mind, and related greatly with my own experiences.”

YES Institute also presented at “All Together Now”, the only statewide conference supporting and convening Florida Public K-12 School Board Members, School district leaders, faculty, counselors, and parents who care for and serve gender and orientation-diverse students. Sponsored by Equality Florida, nearly 100 participants attended the Tampa event, while also enjoying the keynote address from Tim’m West.

YES Institute co-presented our communication models that forward solution-finding and ensure people with strong and differing opinions can feel heard and included in conversations in school communities.

“This session was awesome! Especially with the practice part. We had the opportunity to talk through a difficult situation.”

“The importance of effective communication cannot be overstated. Thank you for the very practical crash course of tools!”
