Impact of Gender Stereotypes on Academic and Mental Health Outcomes

In September, YES Institute presented to the Miami-Dade County Public Schools SAFE Liaison counselors on The Impact of Gender Stereotypes on Academic and Mental Health Outcomes. The presentation focused on new research suggesting stereotypical gender expectations are correlated with lower GPAs and more narrow future career goals.

In the US, boys graduate high school at lower rates than girls, and US university enrollment and graduation rates for young women is 60% compared to young men. Despite the higher academic achievement of girls, high school girls are facing increased mental health challenges not seen before in female youth cohorts.

SAFE Lisiason counselors shared they learned:

The importance of supporting our youth & the effect it has on our students’ mental health and academic performance, for me being knowledgeable enough to support their needs!

I learned more about how to handle gender stereotypes in the school with parents and how to assist families who need a resource.

It was nice to hear again that YES Institute is a good place for families to reach out to get support.

Two additional elementary school PTAs invited YES Institute to present in English and Spanish to explore the crucial role of fatherhood involvement on increased positive outcomes for their children. Miami-Dade County Public Schools celebrated the 12th Annual Fathers in Education Week,  which invites a variety of nonprofit and school professionals to acknowledge, celebrate, and uplift amazing fathers in our community.
