What has people feel welcome in a healthcare setting?
YES Institute has been invited to several medical facilities to lead trainings on patient affirming care. Our team was recently invited to train over 175 first-year medical students at University of Miami’s (UM) Miller School of Medicine. Professionals in the medical industry are inviting YES Institute to ensure that everyone who enters their facilities feels welcomed and is fully supported in their well-being.
UM’s medical students were thoroughly engaged and grasped the importance of understanding diverse gender and orientation experiences when assisting their patients. These conversations will have an impact on the way medical staff of all levels interact with their patients in the future. Years after taking part in one of our training sessions, our team receives messages from nurses, doctors, and administrative medical staff, where they share how deeply moved they were by one of our courses and its impact on their patients.
“[This training] encouraged me to be more open about my sexual orientation. I just wanted to say I used to be very upset/flustered when checking that box, but with more exposure to being asked about my sexual orientation it has helped.”
“I learned a lot about the nuances involved in having conversations with trans patients, and specifically how large of an impact miscommunication can have on someone’s mental health.”
“I learned how to address individuals who may identify with a gender or sexual minority group in a clinical setting. I also learned about the huge stigma that HIV has currently and the ways that it can impact the patients willingness to disclose such information.”
“I learned a lot about how we in the medical profession can take specific actions to help be inclusive to those in these communities in order to increase their feelings of safety and acceptance.”
Our team is grateful to the many universities, colleges, and medical facilities that continue to reach out to provide the best care to their community and patients. When clinicians create an environment that is welcoming, it shifts the way all people feel about their own physical and mental well-being.
