In South Florida, 62% of middle school students hear anti-gay slurs (“faggot,” “dyke,” “That’s so gay”) on a daily or weekly basis. To prevent these harmful behaviors, we must begin even earlier.
Our early childhood education curriculum reaches children Pre-K through elementary school, as well as their educators. At a recent training for childhood professionals, one participant agonized, “I feel terrible. One boy in my class is constantly picked on for playing with dolls, but I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid of upsetting the parents or losing my job if I say the wrong thing.”
At the end of the day, participants shared:
“I am relieved! Now I feel capable of handling a conversation with a child or parent about gender expectations and bullying.”
“Strongly impacted me. I don’t always have to understand, but I can choose words and actions that respect and include everyone.”
“Now I will be more caring and actually listen to people who have different beliefs.”
