Youth in extreme poverty are half as likely to graduate from high school than their peers in more affluent communities. What’s the solution? Where to begin addressing this disparity?
Teach for America (TFA) is on a mission to close this gap nationwide by training new teachers to serve in low income schools. For the first time ever, TFA brought their summer institute training program to Miami, and 100 incoming corps members participated in YES Institute’s education. These teachers will have an immediate impact on 1,000 elementary, middle, and high school youth.
Thank you, TFA, for giving teachers access to critical skills for addressing daily “anti-gay” bullying, and for your stand to create safer classrooms. Your leadership underscores an important truth: before any learning can happen, students’ fundamental need to feel seen, safe, and supported must be met.
“After today I realize how much of a difference communication can make in connecting families, and how important it is to talk to students about sensitive topics.” – TFA corps member
“I learned so much today. I’ll admit I felt uncomfortable with transgender people before, and now I feel inspired to be the support system for ALL my students.” – TFA corps member
