Henley Garcia

Intern

Portrait of Henley Garcia

What skills and expertise do you bring to the team?

My expertise is mostly web design and development and so I definitely help any way I can with the website.

What inspires you to contribute your time and talents to YES Institute?

Being able to see a smile on someone else’s face brings me joy. We all need help regardless of who we are in this world, and I have an opportunity to make a difference for others every day as an intern.

What do you find most rewarding about your internship?

Every day I get this feeling that I’m changing the world in a small way that has a real impact. Mentoring and support from the staff and fellow interns is very rewarding to me as well.

What project(s) do you enjoy most?

I really enjoy managing the website from the back-end in WordPress, which involves tasks like redirecting links and making changes that optimize our site for the Google Search Engines. I also enjoy creating “intros and outros” for upcoming YouTube videos.

Name a peak experience in your life. What happened?

I was 13 years old, a very oblivious teenager (even though I was very different from everyone else in my school) at the time. This is something definitely I will not forget. I came home from school, my dad had been laid off from a corporation that meant a lot to him. He just stood up and told my brother and me: “I need you both to mature a bit early. I’m going to need your help any way possible.” I truly did help him out and I still help him out to this day. Thanks to that little moment I have found my career path and became the person I am today. My father started with just fire alarm systems, now he is working on security cameras, home automation systems, and IT services.

What is something you hope people know about you?

By society’s standards you can say I’m an introvert since I’m shy and get anxious. But I am the most talkative, kind and supportive person you’ll ever meet. Even sometimes my friends look to me for assistance, and my mother sometimes calls me her little psychologist. I am also a big fan of the TV series Sherlock and enjoy movies that are very inspirational, like The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, The Social Network, and many others. These all mean so much to me.

This is an organization with a track record of making a real difference in the world. Political victories mean little if the hearts and minds of parents, clergy, and teachers do not change.
