Besides the many programs we
provide throughout South Florida, we have
received requests from Vancouver, British
Columbia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Wilmington, Delaware;
Orlando and West Palm Beach, Florida; Aspen,
Colorado; and El Paso, Texas; asking how to access and replicate our models.
People are realizing that political and advocacy efforts must be accompanied by education to
make real change and create environments that
are safer for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender
and all youth.
The numerous requests for our programs this past year have accelerated our Vision Plan. The demand continues to grow and teachers, clergy, and
healthcare providers across the country are
knocking on our door. We currently have a staff
of 4 full time employees,
guided by an 11 member volunteer Board of
Directors. To grow and expand, YES Institute has to work smarter.
We are dedicating the coming years to developing YES Distance Learning Education Center. The Jonathan Lewis
Foundation has kicked off this endeavor by
awarding a matching grant of $50,000 toward
this initiative (Read More), and just recently committed to another $100,000 towards this initiative (READ MORE). State–of-the-art technology makes our reach limitless, enabling communication and education on gender and orientation to reach even the most remote locations. Delivery of education moves from a small team on-site to a global online presence, capable of meeting training needs in every sector of the community, nationally and internationally.
Funding this initiative allows YES Institute to complete these next steps:
- Enhance the YES Education Center with a Virtual Classroom, capable of producing Live courses, that are delivered using web technologies to audiences globally. To see video clips of our courses, go here.
April, 2006 - We have just completed our 2nd graduate-level course for the Department of Education at North Georgia College & State UNiversity (NGCSU). This couse is called the Gender Continuum in Education (EDUC7790 at NGCSU) and is taken by educators getting their masters degree in Education. Our first EDUC7790 was the semester of 2005 and the results were so great that enrollment for our Spring 2006 semester more than doubled! The Dean of Education at NGCSU requested that we teach a course for his faculty. We are now teaching a 2nd course at NGCSU called Communication for Safer Learning Environments and have been asked to teach this course again in the Summer 2006 term. Read more here.
- Replicate YES Institute models in other organizations, through mentoring and leadership development modules, Train-the-Trainer courses, and via distance learning and video conferencing. Update - January 2007 - We held our 2nd annual Education week, with 12 participants from around the country.
- Expand our accreditations and CEU offerings for teachers, clergy and healthcare professionals by developing online education courses.
- Online resources for parents and families making education continually accessible in a safe and anonymous environment at a self directed pace.
- Create an online community in the spirit of OpenEducation and Open Courses so that all educational resources at YES are available to anyone.
