Approximate # of participants: 15
The mission of YES Institute is to prevent suicide and ensure the healthy development of all youth through powerful communication and education on gender and orientation. Among gay, transgender and questioning youth, studies show the following:
•27% of gay teenagers report suicide attempts vs. 4% of heterosexual youth in Miami-Dade County.
•40% of youth who become homeless each year describe their orientation as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
•13% of gay and transgender foster care youth reported mistreatment, vs. 6% of heterosexual youth.
Bring your experiences, questions, and concerns as we invite you to participate in an interactive dialogue exploring how gender and orientation stigma impacts the safety, well-being, and permanency outcomes for our foster care youth. Guest speakers will be featured for Q&A. Best practices and local resources in the child welfare system will also be shared.
