Patrick Travers has invited YES Institute to present a dialogue on gender and orientation to the Our Kids Fostering & Adoption Summit “Changing Destinies” Breakout Session.
Breakout Session: How Gender and Orientation Impact All Youth
Children as young as five years old hear bullying slurs like “faggot” and “that’s so gay” in their school and community settings, and researchers have identified these slurs as the most common type of verbal abuse used children against each other. When youth and their peers don’t fit societal expectations of femininity or masculinity, gender stereotypes and binary expectations can create a hostile environment for all students. For youth struggling for acknowledgement of their experience of gender and orientation, and not receiving adequate support, suicide attempt and substance abuse can result (CDC, 2016). Learn about community-based dialogue and education initiatives that can support all youth and families, reduce the risk of harm, and create safer and more welcoming school and home environments. Guest parent and youth speakers will be sharing about their experiences and engaging in Q&A with participants.
