YES Institute has an evolving partnership with the University of Miami (UM), one of the nation’s top private research universities. Professors from various disciplines continue to incorporate YES education into their curricula, committed to preparing students with the most up-to-date knowledge on gender and orientation.

Student leaders at the Miller School of Medicine regularly invite YES Institute to train medical students, nurses, and physicians. At a recent YES training, a medical student commented, “This discussion cleared up a lot of questions I’ve been afraid to ask. This education isn’t provided anywhere else in our curriculum.” Read more here.

Students in the Educational and Psychological Studies Department have the opportunity to intern at YES Institute, earning college credit while making a difference in the community. In this internship program, students gain valuable training in our unique communication and education models, working closely with YES staff on projects that highlight their specific talents and interests.

“I have witnessed the drastic shift people can experience as a result of YES education. At one presentation, a woman shared that she was brought up to believe that ‘homosexuals’ are not accepted in God’s eyes and will be sent to hell. YES speakers gave her the opportunity to speak her fears openly, discuss the topic, and learn how gender and orientation impact everyone. Before my internship, I was not emotionally invested in YES’ mission; now I am. I know I will be a better counselor because I came to YES.” - Christy Gonzalez, UM student and YES intern

Coordinators of the Sexual Assault Response Team and the Institute for Individual & Family Counseling sourced a long-term collaboration with YES Institute. Counselors who are equipped with knowledge on gender and orientation will be prepared to respond appropriately to all community members with the highest standard of professional care.

UM is committed to being on the leading edge of breakthroughs in education and research. We look forward to supporting them further in realizing that goal.
