The Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is working to create not just great physicians, but community leaders who think holistically, globally and locally. YES Institute is partnering with FIU to support them in honoring that bold declaration.
Medial students grappled with the latest research around gender and orientation and the implications for healthcare. Many were taken aback by the obstacles to healthcare gay and transgender patients face. One student commented, “I knew ‘trans’ was still controversial, but I thought ‘gay’ was accepted. I’m shocked to learn that so many people get turned away from doctors because of perceived orientation.”
A huge thanks to FIU medical students for diving into the conversation, and being a true model for medical professionals around the world!
“This really opened my eyes! Gender dysphoria can be at the root of so many health problems. All the knowledge in the world won’t matter if patients don’t feel safe.” – FIU Medical Student
“I learned a lot! I plan to apply this knowledge and ask questions to these patients in a way that does not alienate them or make them feel unwelcome. – FIU Medical Student
